How to apply

  1. Write your request in English, Hindi or Bengali, addressed to the Public Information Officer at the address above.
  2. State clearly what information you want. You are not required to give a reason for asking.
  3. Give your full name and an address at which the reply can be sent.
  4. Enclose the prescribed application fee of ₹10, in the manner permitted by the West Bengal Right to Information Rules — normally by Indian Postal Order, demand draft, banker's cheque or court fee stamp, in favour of the authority as notified.
  5. Applicants below the poverty line are exempt from the fee, on production of proof.
  6. You may also apply online through the Government of India RTI portal at rtionline.gov.in where that portal covers the authority concerned.

Time limits

  • Information is normally supplied within 30 days of receipt of the application.
  • Where the request concerns the life or liberty of a person, it is answered within 48 hours.
  • If the application is transferred to another public authority, that is done within 5 days and you are informed.

Fees for supplying information

  • ₹2 per page of A4 or A3 size created or copied.
  • Actual cost for a larger-size copy, or for a sample or model.
  • For inspection of records: no fee for the first hour, then ₹5 for each fifteen minutes.
  • Information on a disc or in printed form is charged at the rate notified.

Fees are as prescribed under the applicable Right to Information Rules and may be revised by the Government from time to time.

If you are not satisfied

First appeal. If you do not receive a decision within the time limit, or you are not satisfied with the decision, you may appeal to the First Appellate Authority within thirty days of the decision or of the date it should have been given.

Second appeal. A second appeal lies with the West Bengal Information Commission within ninety days of the first appellate decision, or of the date that decision was due.
